Its been a full on production week in Swansea. The set was squeezed into the Volcano space expertly by Suzi (Dorey – Designer) and Erich (Talbot – Lighting) with some help from assembled volunteers. Its an unusual performance space, particularly with seating in place, as there are obstructing pillars, low ceilings and a crumbling floor (once the dance floor has been removed I should add). But there is a gritty bleakness that suits the Noir elements in the show and perhaps a further discomfort for the audience to negotiate. Its not our intention to put the audience at a level of discomfort but by asking them to choose the scenes, and to do that publicly, it is a challenge at times I know and the addition of the scatter seating creates another layer of … unease(?). Next week we are in the studio at the Riverfornt and I’m looking forward to how that space will frame the set. In Newport we are also using a conventional theatre seating arrangement (stepped seats) to test the selection format further and although this will improve sight lines I wonder if we will miss the uncompromising nature of 229. The Volcano posse have been magnificent in their support this week and have gone out of their way to help the running of the venue. Its much appreciated as we are already trying to highlight the upcoming shows, develop a technical dialogue with the other venues on the tour, gather and distribute audience feedback (thanks to Rory) and stay fit and focused on performing. There is no doubt we sleep less, eat less healthily and drink more alcohol during these first production days. And after two full blooded performances we are comparing some mighty bruises, rubbing sore muscles but smiling at the physical engagement that the show demands.
So with one more show to go here in Swansea we are plotting tonight’s additional extra’s, the de-rig, the get out and the drive home. We have sold both nights out so far and we hope for one further push at the box office to see the show home in fine fashion. We are competing with the Six Nations, the New Sherman, a night on Wind Street, the freeze and probably some good TV(?) but I hope we get a good audience to say farewell to Swansea in style.
Before all that however I intend to get to Govinda’s for some dahl and rice.
Gareth
ps If anyone has seen the show – I would like to know how you felt about selecting the scenes.
